Position Overview


Primary Purpose of the Position
The Therapeutic Recreation (TR) program provides curricular and co-curricular experiences for students to become leaders in therapeutic recreation and related professions. Graduates meet requirements to apply for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Certification and licensure by the state of North Carolina.
This primary purpose of this position is to support WSSU's strategic plan as well as the School of Health Science and Therapeutic Recreation Department plans to increase student success by focusing attention on experiential learning in all aspects, especially higher rates of student placements for field and internship courses. Results include higher rates of retention upon completion of coursework, increased number of on time graduation, and enhanced skill level upon graduation. The TR Clinical Coordinator will oversee all experiential aspects of the curriculum including internship. The person in this full-time on campus position will support increased degree efficiency, improved student skill development, and enhanced community engagement.

Department Required Skills
The ideal candidate for the Clinical Coordinator position will demonstrate excellence in supporting the experiential approach to learning for the students in the TR degree program. The individual will be able to link learning opportunities on campus and in the community within the academic parameters for the university, department, and outside agencies (e.g., NCTRC, NCBRTL). These are the required and preferred qualifications for the position.

Required

  • Currently certified through the NCTRC as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Currently licensed in North Carolina as a Licensed Recreational Therapist; or able to obtain licensure by the start of the position
  • Earned master's degree in recreation therapy or related discipline
  • Evidence that shows skills to work as a team member and leader
  • Minimum of two years full time practice as a CTRS

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience in higher education
  • Involvement in professional organizations
  • Supervisory experience with internships
  • Completion of ATRA or other TR internship training
  • Familiarity with community engagement
  • Commitment to experiential learning approaches
  • Engagement as a practitioner or educator in interprofessional and collaborative practices
  • Willingness to leverage technology in the teaching and learning environment
  • Experience with funding projects through grants or other strategies


Required License or Certification

  • National certification as a CTRS; NC state licensed as a TRS
  • Relevant master's degree

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
Curriculum components include serving as instructor for internship and field classes; assisting with lab components, practicum, and community engagement aspects of classes. In addition, the clinical coordinator will be responsible for development of new sites and maintenance of current sites for student experiences. Further, the development and implementation of the newly renovated TR lab space will be a primary task for the position. Development will include scheduling, setting up community intervention programs, and developing funding through grants, donations, and so forth. The person in this position will need to collaborate with the faculty as well as stakeholders such as field and intern supervisors as well as potential service recipients.
