Job Summary

This is a contract role that ends one year from the hire date.

Dr. Jenny Liu's research group within the Intsitute for Health and Aging is seeking a 30% time research data analyst to assist with a wide range of data focused activities. The inclumbent will be a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques; experience with R software is preferred. The incumbent will demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Specifcally, the incumbent will be responsible for managing and analyzing data from completed and ongoing research focused on increasing access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. The data orginating from these projects is often complex, including multiple datasets that will need extensive cleaning and merging. The analyst will be responsible for managing, cleaning and analyzing these datasets, guided by faculty and staff within the department. The analyst will be expected to create data dashboards that are user-friendly and easily accessbile to all study staff, both within UCSF and in Tanzania.The analyst will also be responsible for generating polished presentation materials for dissemination of research results to various stakeholders (for example, infographics, data visualizations and slide decks). The analyst will also work closely with the research implementation teams in Tanzania and elsewhere (participanting in weekly calls at a minumum), responding to their data needs to facilitate successful implementation of the research.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $120,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

This position will be located in the Institute for Health and Aging (IHA) within the UCSF School of Nursing. IHA was the first research unit established at UCSF (in 1985). IHA's mission is to foster multidisciplinary collaborative research, education, and public service in the fields of health policy and economics, including the process of aging over the life course. Faculty at the Institute represent multiple disciplines and health professions, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, economics, public administration, public health, social work, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and law. Within IHA, the Dorothy Pechman Rice Center for Health Economics was established in May 2000 to provide training and mentoring to health economics professionals, conduct research, and disseminate health economics information to professional and lay audiences.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Master's degree in related area (public health, statistics, data science)
  • 3 years related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of research function.
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in project management.
  • Extensive experience analyzing data with R, SAS or Stata
  • Experience creating data dashboards using R or other comparable software

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Experience creating data visualizations, infographics and polished slide decks
  • Experience conducting geospatial analyses and creating maps
  • Experience submitting IRB applications and modifications
