What does the Internal Communications Director do?

The Internal Communications Director is responsible for developing and executing internal communication strategies that foster employee engagement, enhance organizational culture, and promote effective information sharing within the organization. The director plays a vital role in keeping employees informed, aligned, and motivated, ensuring that they have the information they need to excel in their roles and contribute to the organization's mission of providing exceptional cancer care. This position requires exceptional communication skills, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the healthcare industry, particularly in the field of oncology.


Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive internal communications strategy to effectively communicate organizational goals, initiatives, and updates to employees across the organization's network of locations.
  • Manage direct reports, as well as external agencies and vendors.
  • Create and manage communication channels and platforms, including email newsletters, intranet sites, town halls and other internal events to facilitate effective information sharing and engagement.
  • Craft and distribute regular communications, including newsletters, memos, and announcements, to keep employees informed about organizational news, events, changes, and achievements.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, department heads, and human resources, to ensure consistent and timely messaging throughout the organization.
  • Develop and maintain an end-to-end communications calendar to plan and coordinate internal communications activities, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and key milestones.
  • Write, edit, and proofread communication materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency, adhering to the organization's brand guidelines.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support to leadership in crafting messages for town halls, employee meetings, and other internal events.
  • Develop and implement employee engagement initiatives, such as surveys, focus groups, and recognition programs, to foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture.
  • Measure and analyze the effectiveness of internal communication efforts using key performance indicators (KPIs) and feedback mechanisms, making data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in internal communications to continuously enhance the organization's communication strategies.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for will have the following background and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (15+ years) in internal communications, with experience managing a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging messages for a diverse audience.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to align internal communications with organizational objectives.
  • Experience in managing communication channels and platforms, including intranets, email marketing tools, and digital signage.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and build relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of employee engagement strategies and best practices.
  • Proficiency in using communication analytics tools to measure the effectiveness of internal communications efforts.
