The Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics seeks aNurse Practitioner (NP) to join the Division of General Pediatrics Rales Health Center as part of our substitute clinician pool. The NP will provide care for elementary and middle school students at the Rales School Based Health Center at KIPP Baltimore, a school which serves more than 1600 students in grades K-8.

The Ruth and Norman Rales Center for the Integration of Health and Education at Johns Hopkins, seeks to redesign school-based health programs to improve the health and academic achievement of children and adolescents from low-income communities. This includes the implementation of an innovative school health program that provides accessible pediatric primary care tailored to the needs of children at KIPP Baltimore.

The Rales Health Center is the site for clinical services and includes both school health services (traditional school nurse services) and a school-based health center staffed by a nurse practitioner and pediatrician. The NP performs a variety of medical care services for patients in a school-based setting.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interviews and records the medical history of patients.
  • Conducts physical examinations and assesses the physical condition of patients to determine medical problems.
  • Treats minor physical illnesses following standard medical practices and procedures and, when necessary, refers patients to physicians and community health facilities and agencies for medical care and treatment and monitors visits by patients to physicians, facilities and agencies.
  • Prepares and maintains patient records.
  • Reviews, studies and updates knowledge on developments and trends in medicine and community health. Prepares reports and submits to superiors.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, objectives and techniques of community health nursing.
  • Skilled in the delivery of clinical health services to children and early adolescents and experienced working with urban, low income families.
  • Knowledge of the diagnostic treatment and consultation skills expected of a nurse practitioner to interview and record the medical history of patients.
  • Ability to assess the physical condition of patients and determine medical problems. Ability to treat minor physical illnesses.
  • Ability to deal with patients and physicians and other health care professionals. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members.
  • Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long- and short-term management of acute and chronic health problems.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in some aspect of school health is strongly preferred, but not required.

Starting Salary Range: $44.82 - $78.41 HRLY ($68,640 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
