We are seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to add to our current clinician group. Our team currently includes two Family Physicians and seven midlevel practitioners, as well as several specialists from the La Crosse Gundersen Health System campus who provide outreach services in the West Union area. The West Union location is a Monday through Friday family medicine practice with walk-in clinic appointments. In addition, the practice has two satellite clinics located in Postville and Fayette both are a Monday through Friday family medicine practice.

This position will work Monday through Friday with hours that may flex between 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at our West Union clinic and at one of our satellite locations.

West Union is a rural community in beautiful NE Iowa. Enjoy your life and practice in West Union, the county seat for Fayette County. Our town has been designated a Green Main Street community with many outdoor recreational opportunities, a wonderful school system, and a robust community. The population base for West Union and surrounding rural communities is approximately 21,000. A state-of-the-art, completely remodeled, full-service hospital is attached to the clinic.

An Iowa license and completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program is required to start but not a prerequisite for applying.

Job Description:

Position Purpose: * The Nurse Practitioner (NP) performs the functions of examining, assessing, planning and implementing the health care of assigned patients in collaboration and under the general supervision of a licensed physician. The NP secures patient histories, performs physical examinations, orders laboratory tests, develops and implements treatment plans, performs diagnostic and treatment procedures, records findings, and provides patient education and counseling to enhance our effectiveness in providing primary care, preventative services, and improved outreach. Scheduling Pattern: * Monday through Friday Clinic hours. Extended hours as required by the needs of the organization. Education/Licensure/Training/Experience: Masters of Science in Nursing granted by an accredited college or university, and is qualified for certification as a nurse practitioner. A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the stat of employment, current certifications as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in Iowa. Must be able to apply diverse principles of logic, medical or scientific thinking to a wide range of health care situations. Ability to apply accepted methods of treatment and creative new developments to heath care problems. Special Skills & Abilities: * Annual Competency Skills Review: Completion of an annual skills evaluation is required of this position to demonstrate competency to perform the NP role. This evaluation is reviewed and delegated by the supervising physician as appropriate activities for this NP, based on training and experience and the practice setting and practice needs. The list is reviewed and updated on an annual basis. Additional activities may be performed under direct physician supervision as required. * Scope of Practice: The NP's practice may not exceed his or her education, training, or experience and may not exceed the scope of practice of a supervising physician. * Prescriptive Authority: The NP prepares prescription orders for medications, including controlled substances, in accordance to all applicable state and federal laws, under the guidance of a supervising physician. Supervision is assured through the use of written guidelines which are updated and reviewed annually, direct consultation for situations not covered by guidelines, and/or countersignature of the patient record. The NP does not prescribe substances a supervising physician does not have authority to prescribe, Schedule I controlled substances, anabolic steroids to enhance athletic performance, nor experimental or investigational substances, except as directed by research protocol approved by Gundersen's Institutional Review Board and a supervising physician who is an investigator in the study. Schedule II controlled substances listed as stimulants or depressants require prior approval and direction by the supervising physician. They are limited to use in treatment of cancer-related pain, narcolepsy, hyperkinesis, drug-induced brain dysfunction, epilepsy, and refractory depression. All written prescriptions issued by a Nurse Practitioner shall contain the date of issue; name and address of patient; name of substance/device, strength, quantity, and directions for use; the Nurse Practitioner's name, the practice address and phone number; the Nurse Practitioner's signature; and the Nurse Practitioner's DEA number, if a controlled substance. Working Conditions: * May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparation, hostile situations, stressful situations, and other conditions common to working in a health care environment. Access to Patient Information: * In order to comply with HIPAA, all employees must abide by organization and department policies regarding security and privacy. All staff members must work together to ensure patient confidentiality. This position will be working in a patient care area and will have access to oral, written, and electronic data containing patient information. This information is needed in order to carry out the duties assigned to this position. All staff will display name badges when seeking data. Staff will have electronic access via their own individual password and will log off as appropriate when inquiry is complete. Patient records and charts will be kept in a confidential manner in a controlled area to assure privacy and security of such information. Prepares and submits accurate billing and insurance claim information reflecting the services provided, in compliance with the standard coding guidelines, federal and state regulation, insurance contract terms, and Gundersen Palmer policy and procedures. * Quality - To promote quality outcomes while emphasizing positive patient experiences 0. Supports the Gundersen Palmer Mission Statement, values, and goals of service by demonstrating concern for quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations, services, activities, and personnel. 1. Cares for patients of any age to obtain a personal medical history, perform an appropriate physical examination, record and present pertinent data concerning the patient in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician. 2. Performs and assists in performing routine diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures. 3. Recognizes medical emergencies and initiates evaluative and treatment procedures necessary in life-threatening situations, and immediately reports to supervising physician. 4. Assists the practice physicians in quality improvement efforts by participating in quality improvement teams, maintaining necessary logs, preparing reports, and participating in practice evaluation and education programs. * Service - to provide the services our patients need in the appropriate setting. 0. Maintains knowledge of current statutes regulating Nurse Practitioner practice and provides within the limitations as established by the state licensure boards, local and federal regulations. 1. Instructs and counsels patients on physical and mental health, including diet, disease, medications, treatment, growth and development, screening and disease prevention. 2. Prepares and maintains clinical records in a problem-oriented format, fostering communication between health care providers, continuity of care and coordination of services. 3. Facilitates referrals to community health facilities, agencies and resources. 4. Provides patient services in outpatient facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, and patient homes as required. 5. Consults with the physicians, nursing staff, and technicians in order to evaluate standards of patient care provided and makes recommendations for improvement. * Workplace of Choice - to create an environment to attract and retain excellent staff and physicians. 0. Complies with and keeps current regarding licensure. 1. Participates in the annual performance review process by completing a self-evaluation instrument, assisting the general supervising physician in updating the job description and scope of practice, establishing a personal education plan, and meeting with the general supervising physician and administrative director to review progress and establish future goals. 2. Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. * Growth/Community - to expand services at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital and Clinics that meets the need of our communities. 0.
