Position Description Summary: |
The School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin as early as August 2025. We seek scholars with a strong research profile and teaching interests in political communication with a focus on one or more of the following areas: digital platforms and technology, including AI; networked advocacy; online political discourse; misinformation, hate speech and extremism; computational methods for the study of political discourse or behavior; and/or the role of the news media in the new information ecology. The successful candidate will be aligned with GW's Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics (
IDDP), whose mission is to help society understand critical challenges that arise at the intersection of digital technology, media, and democracy, in turn informing sound policy solutions through rigorous, evidence-based research that advances democratic values. |
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: |
Responsibilities include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including courses in political communication, social media platforms, and introductory data analysis; conducting a successful program of research; advising students; and performing department and university service. This position is pending final budgetary approval. |
Minimum Qualifications: |
Applicants must have a PhD in a field related to media and public affairs such as political science, communication, sociology, computational social science, or a closely related field. The candidate must have or demonstrate potential for a high profile and outstanding reputation in the field as demonstrated by publication record, professional recognition and/or leadership positions, and demonstrate excellence in teaching media and public affairs. |

An internationally recognized center for research and teaching in political and international communication and journalism, The George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program based in the heart of Washington, D.C., where media, public affairs and politics intersect. We offer two undergraduate majors (journalism/mass communication and political communication) as well as an MA degree in media and public affairs focused on strategic political communication.
