Summary:
The Field Communications Manager is responsible for internal communications content strategy and creation for the STERIS Healthcare North American Commercial organization. The position enhances internal stakeholders' understanding of the company's priorities, key initiatives, culture, and business strategy. The individual works closely with senior leadership, human resources, sales, service, and shared services departments. This individual is passionate about strategic and creative communications to drive employee engagement. Core responsibilities include using communications channels, strategies, and technologies to help the field organization stay informed of positive developments at STERIS, key strategies for success, challenges, and future strategic direction. The Field Communications Manager ensures the field-based Sales and Service teams are connected to the STERIS mission, culture and strategy, ultimately improving employee engagement and commercial success. This position is hybrid, based in our Mentor, OH Corporate office.
What you will do as a Field Communications Manager:
Internal Communications Strategy and Execution (60%)
- Defines and partners with senior-level Healthcare leadership to develop strategy for and lead implementation of internal communications for the North American Healthcare business segment
- Establishes a strong understanding of the commercial strategic direction and maintains a pulse on field-based strategy and culture to propose and deliver targeted internal communications
- Collaborates with business unit commercial leaders to support message direction, development, and implementation
- Partners with HR leaders to define the best approach and implement change communications strategies across several business units
- Leads the planning, directing and coordinating to drive Healthcare communication to inform, engage and inspire Associates around core values, business strategy, and priorities, while reinforcing STERIS's position as an industry leader
- Manages, defines and executes on communications in support of the Healthcare national commercial meeting
Channel Strategy and Implementation (30%)
- Creates the strategy for and executes on a variety of communications channels to meet the needs of a diverse workforce, including hybrid, remote, digitally connected and deskless employees
- Leverages a variety of channel and adjusts communications appropriately, including electronic newsletters, video, digital signage, email, and social media
- Leads collaboration among field and business unit marketing teams to ensure alignment on communications channels
- Identifies and defines communications plan and calendar for Healthcare leadership
- Owns distribution strategy of communications; manages employee distribution lists and effectively leverages existing lists to ensure proper distribution of communications to targeted groups
- Utilizes VOC to develop communications best practices and adjust strategy; identifies methods to measure the effectiveness and satisfaction of communications efforts
- Partners with Corporate Communications and Healthcare Creative Services, maintains and communicates standards and processes for communications via internal channels - including standards for clarity, simplicity, style, and consistency as well as brand identity
Continuous Improvement (10%)
- Researches internal communications best practices and suggests new opportunities to improve the field communications program
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge, participates in educational opportunities, stays updated on new technologies that can enhance the field communications strategy
- Manages continuous improvement initiatives within the function including key performance indicators and root cause countermeasures, visual management, and standard work
- Leads Kaizen events and respective action plans; prepares and presents reports defining project proves, problems and solutions
- Drives project teams to make decisions, complete tasks, and execute the plan based on the defined deliverables and timelines
- Uses LEAN philosophies and methodology for process improvement
The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed:
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 7+ years of experience in communications, marketing communications, public relations, external and internal communications, journalism, or other related business experience
- Prior internal, corporate or field-based communications experience
- Must have demonstrated, through previous experience, an ability to think strategically with an ability to develop creative communications solutions
- Experience in a corporate editorial capacity (writing for a website, electronic newsletter, executive emails, etc.)
- Digital fluency and a foundational understanding of the digital space, platforms, and language
- Superior writing and editing skills
Preferred:
- Experience effectively communicating with employees to help meet business objectives
- Creative and video editing skills
- Experience with speech writing
Skills:
- Outstanding ability to synthesize information and represent/position for field sales and services
- Prior involvement in collaborating with mid- and senior management on communications initiatives
- Experience implementing and/or managing digital colleague engagement/communication tools
- Familiarity with internal communications analysis and measurement metrics
- Experience with internal collaboration tools/communications tools
- Ability to understand and interpret high-level commercial goals and drill them down to tactical, impactful initiatives to drive a key point or message
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to communicate effectively across all management levels
- Excellent organizational and planning skills, able to anticipate needs and problems
- Ability to lead multiple projects and drive to completion, independently and as part of a team
- Ability to think innovatively and creatively, and change course if necessary to achieve desired results
- Ability to develop creative ideas and translate them into actionable communication strategies that result in increased engagement
