Provides oversight to PAs and Grossing Technologist. Schedules and maintains adequate workflow coverage in gross room. Interviews qualified personnel for the gross room department. Communicates department problems or matters that need attention to the appropriate personnel and assists in providing possible solutions. Performs all other duties of a Pathologist Assistant or Grossing Technologist when required. This is an onsite position. Mon - Fri w/ Rotational Weekends - 8:00AM-5:00PM
- Perform and assist in human post-mortem examination including but not limited to:
- Review autopsy permit for legal adequacy and if requested, retrieve and review of patient chart(s) and clinical information with Pathologist if required, summarize clinical history.
- Confer with the Pathologist to identify any special technique or procedure which will be necessary, i.e., Immunofluorescence, toxicological studies, cultures, smears, Virchow or Rokitansky, possible potentially ineffective or contagious, etc.
- Under the direction of the Pathologist, perform and assist in the autopsy including external examination, in-situ organ examination, evisceration, dissection, and recording of findings such as organ weight, presence of body fluids, gross anatomical findings, etc. and collect any biological specimens for analysis if required.Upon request, select and submit tissue section for microscopic examination.
- Perform and assist in human surgical pathology examination including but not limited to:
- Assure correct data entry and numbering of specimens.
- Dictate gross description and perform dissection of surgical specimens of which the majority are complex cases, i.e., not biopsies.
- Using independent judgment to ascertain normal vs. abnormal tissue, select and submit tissue sections for microscopic examination includingpreparation of frozen and permanent sections for light and immunofluorescent microscopy.
- Select and submit tissue for special studies as required (i.e., ERA/PRA, culture, chromosome analysis, immunofluorescence, etc.).
- Assist Pathologist with frozen section or special procedures as requested or required.
- Photography of surgical and pertinent specimens as required.
- Responsible for assuring the proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies and cleanliness of the surgical pathology area.
- Rotate between Quest Diagnostics and other hospital pathology laboratories as required in the capacity of a Pathologist's Assistant.
- Assist in collection of specimens for anatomic pathology conferences, if needed.
- Assist in teaching of Pathologists' Assistant Trainee, Surgical Pathology Laboratory Assistant, and Histology personnel in accepted methods and procedures.
Required WorkExperience:
- 3 years combined experience in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology if not certified by an ASPC program.
- 3 years gross experience including large complex specimens.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. of reagents.
Knowledge:
- Successful completion of a training program approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
- Must be nationally certified by or be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP) examination.
