JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Position Overview:

The Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing (Nese CON) at Penn State University invites applications for an open rank, tenure-line faculty position. We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to the interdisciplinary mission of improving the health and well-being of children and families, with a distinct research focus in child maltreatment.

This position is co-funded by Penn State's interdisciplinarySocial Science Research Institute(SSRI) and the successful candidate will have a dedicated affiliation with the SSRI Child Maltreatment Solutions Network. In addition, candidates will be expected to contribute to SSRI'smissionto foster research that addresses critical human and social problems at the local, national, and international levels. SSRI has five strategic foci: 1) the causes and consequences of inequality; 2) human development and behavior; 3) the social and environmental determinants of health; 4) innovative and data intensive research methods; and 5) individual and community impact. SSRI supports interdisciplinary research by bringing researchers across the university together around emerging areas, and by providing consultation, seed grants, faculty fellowships, and core resources tailored to the needs of social and behavioral scientists. Candidates with excellent interdisciplinary orientations are particularly desired.

Ideal candidates will engage in interdisciplinary and/or translational work, integrating child maltreatment interests with our college mission to transform lives and improve health of the populations we serve.

Responsibilities:

1. Research: Develop and sustain an impactful, externally funded research program that addresses critical issues related to child maltreatment and to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network.

2. Potential areas of focus include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovations in nursing practice and healthcare delivery in contexts involving child sexual abuse or commercial sexual exploitation of children.

  • Prevention, detection, and intervention strategies for child sexual abuse and exploitation.

  • Long-term health outcomes for children, adolescents and families affected by child sexual abuse.

  • Trauma-informed care practices, policies, and impacts.

  • Socioeconomic, cultural, and legal factors influencing child protection and welfare systems.

3. Teaching: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Nursing program and/or Child Maltreatment and Advocacy Studies minor, with potential opportunities to develop specialized courses related to child maltreatment and trauma-informed care.

4. Mentorship: Advise and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, including guiding them in research projects and professional development.

5. Service: Participate in college and university service, as well as contribute to the broader academic and professional community, including the activities of the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network, and with external stakeholders.

6. Community Engagement: Collaborate with community organizations, healthcare systems, and policy makers to translate research into practice and policy.

With a focus on the interdisciplinary topical area of Child Maltreatment as it relates to research targeting understanding and responding to the needs of communities and the impact on adolescents and young adults who are victims of sexual abuse/assault, you will benefit from collaborating with the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE-T) Center and being a member of Penn State's R1 research community. Appointed as a co-funded hire, you will engage with the diverse research portfolio and expertise in Penn State's Social Science Research Institute's Child Maltreatment Solutions Network and the Nese College of Nursing.

Key Qualifications:

Applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor must have the following at the time of beginning the appointment:

  • a doctorate or a degree equivalent to a Ph.D. in the United States.

  • A strong record of research and scholarly achievements.

  • Demonstrated commitment to or vision for building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community.

  • Evidence of or potential for receiving external funding.

  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, strong teaching and mentoring abilities, and excellent communication skills.

  • Expertise in child maltreatment research, trauma-informed care, public health, or related areas.

  • The following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

  • Applicants who are nurses must hold a valid United States nursing license.

Applicants at the rank of Associate Professor should possess the same qualifications as Assistant Professor as well as:

  • Must show evidence of expertise in advancing science or theory and/or conducting an independent program of research (including serving as PI of funded grants and dissemination of research through presentations, scholarly publications, and directing research activities of others).

  • May also engage in team science or innovation/entrepreneurship that is aligned with their independent program of research. Team science should be impactful and scientifically rigorous with the same criteria of dissemination noted above.

Applicants at the rank of Professor should possess the same qualifications as Associate Professor as well as:

  • Must have demonstrated and sustained productivity in research and scholarly activities, recognized leadership in professional organizations and learned societies, and national recognition as a leader in their area of research.

  • May also engage in or assume a leadership role in team science or innovation/entrepreneurship, as articulated above, and extending to the level of full professorship that is aligned with their program of research.
