Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR) is seeking a Health Services Research Specialist to join our rapidly growing program. WiSOR is an interdisciplinary, multi-investigator research program that supports a wide variety of outcomes-focused research, including health care disparities, comparative effectiveness research, patterns of care, and performance and safety in surgical care. The immediate program needs for this position involve project management and research support for NIH-funded studies led by Courtney Balentine, MD, MPH and Patrick Varley, MD, MS. Dr. Balentine's projects combine implementation science and clinical trials to enhance care for older adults having endocrine and general surgery operations. Dr. Varley's research focuses on patterns of care for older veterans with gastrointestinal cancers (colon, liver, pancreas), and includes both qualitative and quantitative studies. You will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks that span the full lifespan of a research study, including screening, consenting, and enrolling study participants and family members, interviewing research participants, developing study materials, communicating with study sites, data quality assurance, compliance, and general project management.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 25% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 25% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • 5% Assists wtih the development, implementation, and maintenance of study protocols and associated documents , including participant-facing materials; maintains knowledge of specific study and regulatory guidelines to help ensure compliance
  • 5% Assists with the development and communication of study task lists and timelines, in consultation with PI and senior research staff
  • 10% Provides administrative support to study team, including scheduling meetings, taking minutes, and organizing meeting materials.

Qualifications:

Required:
-A minimum of 1 year of professional or mentored experience in research, administration/administrative assistance, communications, project management, community/nonprofit work, or related area

Preferred:
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
-Ability to follow research protocols or other detailed procedures consistently and accurately, with a
high level of attention to detail
-Experience submitting IRB applications and/or interacting with the IRB
-Interest or experience in working at the VA and/or with veterans
-Interest or experience in clinician communication with patients, older adults, surgery or decision making
-Ability to meet deadlines, manage tasks, and take initiative without close supervision
-Excellent organizational skills
-Superb written and oral communication skills
-Experience with research, writing, and editing
-Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with study participants and external collaborators
-Evidence of being a quick learner, with motivation to develop new skills


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% - 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $45,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. This position is an ongoing position that will require continuous work eligibility.
