The Facilities Management unit of the Division of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a HVAC Trades Specialist I. About the Opportunity Under the direction of the Manager and/or Lead this position will repair, maintain, install or rebuild all types of HVAC systems and exhaust systems to meet building needs and/or blueprint specifications. Duties will include general upkeep, maintenance, work on all types of refrigeration units, and perform basic sheet metal work both at Health Sciences Center facilities. What you'll do: Journeyman Duties:
- Install, repair and maintain HVAC equipment, fume hoods, exhaust hoods, refrigeration systems, coolers, chillers, sub-zero cooler and associated hardware.
- Rebuild pumps, replace seals, trouble shoot various types of equipment.
- Work from schematics and blueprints in trouble shooting and repair of equipment.
- Must be familiar with both pneumatic and digital controls both during installation, repair, replacement and upgrading systems as necessary to include controls and utilization of computer equipment.
- Fabricate and install various sizes, shapes and lengths of ductwork to support maintenance, and construction projects.
- Customer design, fabricate and install various types of exhaust hoods to meet special installation needs. Install fans, heaters and furnaces as required.
- Be proficient on the utilization of all sheet metal fabricating equipment and associated design/layout tools. Examples: sheers, power brake, power roller, lock former, drill press, lathe, milling machine, etc.
- Must balance air flow systems. Adapt and size new ducts to accept hydronic heating and cooling coils with pneumatic controls and electronic controls.
- Will utilize various software and computer equipment in the performance of tasks, recordkeeping, etc.
- Repair, install and maintain a variety of refrigeration units and similar devices. To include recording and controlling refrigerants as required by code.
- Fabricate, maintain and/or repair various types of metal for kitchen equipment, laboratory equipment, shop equipment, heating and ventilation equipment and research equipment.
- Will perform various labor duties such as digging, carrying, climbing, lifting, keeping work areas clean, tool inventory, materials storage, pick up materials from Warehouse, etc. May be required to operate various other equipment such as fork-lift, etc. Also may be required to assist other crafts as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
- Must have high school diploma or GED.
- 18 months of additional training in HVAC field is essential to provide incumbent skills needed to execute assigned tasks efficiently and safely.
- Broad knowledge of various building trades and skill base in sheet metal fabrication, layout is necessary.
- A minimum of two (2) years HVAC repairs and maintenance, duct work installation and refrigeration maintenance and repairs to include electric/electronic repairs.
- Must have one of the following:

- Completion of an associate degree as an HVAC Technician.
- Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational HVAC program.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of building trades methods and practices.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems and work practices
- Knowledge of Refrigeration systems and work practices
- Knowledge of electronic/electric systems
- Knowledge of local, state and federal building codes
- Ability to read blue prints and construction diagrams
- Ability to work with fabricating metals
- Excellent mathematical skills
- Computer literate
- Demonstrated skills at bond, welding and assembling various materials utilized for ductwork, exhaust and/or distribution systems, etc.
- Knowledge of warehousing functions
- Ability to stoop, bend, crawl and climb heights over 10 feet
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions
- Ability to work around moving equipment
- Ability to have excellent eye to hand coordination
- Ability to hear and interpret sounds in work area and verbal instructions
- Ability to lift materials over 50 lbs
- Ability to work in extreme hot or cold area such as steam tunnels and coolers
- Ability to use logical problem solving techniques
- Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions
- Ability to maintain patient privacy
- Ability to read, follow and interpret safety rules and guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards
- Ability work overtime as may be required
Requirements
- Valid Driver's License required
- Universal Refrigeration License - EPA requires this license for working on refrigerant containing equipment preferred but must be obtained within the first year of employment.
