Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of the Office of Advising and Student Services is to provide academic advising using a developmental model approach. Academic Advisors work with students to develop the knowledge, skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines.

Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings, in-person and online to email, among others.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director oversees the day-to-day operations of advising in the CHESS Office of Advising and Student Services and provides leadership for the advising staff in the college. The Associate Director assigns the advising caseloads for the advisors in the office and coordinates additional responsibilities related to the overall mission of the Office.

The Associate Director also informs advising processes and practices within CHESS and serves as an information resource to students and faculty and staff, which include Department Chairs and Associate Chairs, Undergraduate Coordinators, faculty advisors, and professional advisors in the college. The Associate Director also serves in the Advising Systems Specialist role.
The Associate Director will also be responsible for supervising advisors within the college (along with another Associate Director and the Director of Advising). Supervisory duties include: approving time off requests, training, mentoring, addressing staff issues, and escalating student concerns as appropriate.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Associate Director assists the Director of Advising to ensure the academic advisor implements a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students served by CHESS. This tailored, developmental approach acknowledges that individual student profiles and those of student cohorts may differ not only at the onset of the student academic experience, but throughout their academic career. The Associate Director must have the experience, education, and background necessary to serve the educational function of an advisor, however he or she is doing so in a context developed by the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, and in collaboration with the Advising Director and other colleagues.
Specific functional areas include:

  • Targeted advising
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Candidate must have completed a Master's degree.
  • Candidate must have at least three years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting.
  • Candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must.
  • Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff and faculty required.
  • A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
  • Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Suite) is necessary.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • The Associate Director must have at least three to five years of advising experience after the attainment of the Master's degree
  • 2 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills are a must.
  • A working knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks and EAB is a plus.
  • Experience interacting with faculty and administrators is preferred.
