Job Summary:

The Wichman Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center (CTAC) is a state-of-the-art clinical learning environment where future health care professionals can hone and demonstrate their skills in physical examination, history-taking, communication and patient care with access to standardized patients and the latest educational technology.

Standardized patients are essential to the education of physicians and other health care professionals. They are coached to portray a clinical scenario in a standardized manner to make the educational experience consistent for each learner.

Standardized patients are trained to provide effective feedback, from the patient perspective, directly to the learner or to the assessor as part of the evaluation process.

Standardized Patient Teaching Associate - Under the direction of the program director (faculty) and using the faculty-developed exam protocol, provide clinical skills instruction (using own body) and feedback to students performing the female full GYN examination.

Included responsibilities:
- Oversee students as they perform female GYN examinations.
- Promote education and discussion of preventative practices.
- Offer real-time, constructive feedback on physical exam skills. Allow students to make corrections to techniques to improve overall skills.
- Oversee students' communication skills, ensuring they are following standard medical interviewing skills, including introducing themselves, explaining role/purpose of exam, obtaining consent for exam and listening/communicating effectively.
- Oversee students' professionalism skills, ensuring they are conveying a respectful attitude, seeking help/direction as needed, readily responding to feedback and using appropriate language.

A period of training, orientation and probation is required.


Responsibilities:
Provides patient simulation in a controlled environment through one on one interaction with learners and faculty. Role-plays actual patients within a simulated environment that duplicates a real clinical setting as closely as possible.

  • 40% Portrays the personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics, and concerns of a healthcare patient during a physical examination
  • 40% Assists students in learning to help patients through difficult emotional situations in a safe environment
  • 10% Utilizing one's own body, this position provides clinical skills instruction and feedback to
    healthcare students in performing the female breast, pelvic and recto-vaginal exam and the male genital, urinary, and rectal exams.
  • 10% Providing instruction and evaluation to medical and other health profession students on medical
    interviewing skills concerning issues related to reproductive and sexual health.

Qualifications:

21-70 year old female in good health, with normal anatomical findings. Must be comfortable having repetitive full GYN examination using own body in education process. Must have the ability to collaboratively work with colleagues. A period of training, orientation and probation is required.
- Previous experience in training and/or teaching in the areas of health care, female's health, sexuality or communication is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with students, staff, faculty and peers.
- Possess strong time management skills and ability to monitor students progress during exams in order to complete teaching session in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Willingness and ability to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with co-workers.


Work Schedule:

M-F, times determined with supervisor.


Work Type:

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended based on need and/or funding.


Salary:

$92.00 HOURLY
Fixed
Two-tiered system:

- $92/hour for instructional work
- $20/hr for non-instructional work
- work involves intimate examinations and direction instruction (ie. instruction is not done through a faculty member
- GTAs work under the direction of faculty
- Instructional time includes teaching seminars, contact time with students in clinic, completing student performance assessments, and serving as a trainer for new hires.
- Non-instructional time includes set-up and tear-down of clinics, staff meetings, driving to remote sites, required compliance trainings, and receiving training as a new hire.


Additional Information:

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. University sponsorship is not available for this position.
