About the Job

The Patel/Kratzke lab at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Masonic Cancer Center is seeking to hire a Research Technician with a Life Sciences Multidiscipline Specialty designation. The lab is located in the Phillips Wangensteen Building, on the East Bank of the Minneapolis campus. This position will involve designing, executing and performing experiments and procedures in support of lab goals and grant commitments; and analyzing data related to lung cancer and mesothelioma research in animals and humans. This person will prepare samples for analysis, perform laboratory tasks, collect data, prepare documented observations and evaluate results to establish significance to this area of research. The position will predominantly involve laboratory research. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge late pre-clinical cancer research with a goal of developing candidate therapeutics for clinical translation. The candidate will work in a collaborative environment with other members of the lab and interdisciplinary collaborators.

Key responsibilities:

* Research activities (85-90%):
o Design, execute and perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures related to human and murine models of lung cancer and mesothelioma.
o Perform cell culture and maintain cell lines used in experiments.
o Contribute to the planning and the design of experiments, including those utilizing animal models.
o Assist with animal handling, including administration of drugs and other treatments.
o Have some degree of schedule flexibility to perform experiments requiring evening or weekend treatment of animals.
o Conduct and analyze flow cytometry experiments and immunoblots.
o Prepare samples for analysis and perform DNA and RNA extraction from blood and tissue samples.
o Attend laboratory meetings and present research findings.
o Collect, enter, analyze and summarize data from laboratory experiments.
o Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes, and suggests modifications. Keep accurate and detailed records of all laboratory activities.
o Collaborate with other researchers and laboratory staff to achieve research goals, including contributing to the planning and design of experiments.
o Communicate regularly with team members to share data, troubleshoot experiments, and coordinate tasks as well as disseminate research findings to internal and external audiences.
o Help with the preparation of scientific papers, presentations and posters.
o Assist and develop skills in grant writing.
o Remain knowledgeable in the research methods, techniques, and developments in the field of specialty.

Clinical Research (10-15%)
o May be able to help with clinical data collection for clinical research projects.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials

Required Qualifications
* Either a Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 4 years.
* Previous Laboratory experience.
* Experience with laboratory techniques, including cell culture and flow cytometry.
* Experience handling laboratory animals.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Strong organizational and communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to design and conduct laboratory experiments.
* Attention to detail and the ability to accurately record and analyze data.
* Ability to work in a dynamic team environment, collaborating effectively with other members of the laboratory.

Pay and Benefits
