Communications Coordinator

This position oversees and implements social media and website initiatives and event activity for the Racial Revolutionary and Inclusive Guidance for Health Throughout STEM (R-RIGHTS) team led by Dr. Ebony O. McGee, Professor in the School of Education, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Department of Mental Health, School of Public Health.

In this role, we are seeking aCommunications Coordinatorwho will use social media to drive users to the team's website, highlight relevant research, announce events, share new publications and video content, and foster a sense of community connection - while always ensuring that communications are aligned with the group's brand messaging and policies.

The role encompasses various tasks related to social media management, website upkeep, publication promotion, event coordination, and speaker assistance. The Communications Coordinator will engage actively with diverse audiences through social and mobile channels to enhance visibility, interaction, and brand recognition.

The ideal candidate should be a proactive individual with a strong interest in the social and cultural impacts of technology. Strong skills in writing, organization, academic research, as well as effective time management and multitasking abilities are essential for success in this role.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Develop and implement social media and website initiatives related to R-RIGHTS and JHU community (40%)

  • Create and maintain the overall and day-to-day social media and website presence, including design, content, and graphical elements.
  • Develop, post, and schedule social media posts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Twitter.
  • Use videos, photography, text, and blogs to advance presence in the online community.
  • Creation of visual graphics, videos, and eye-catching text for materials to be shared on social media.
  • Engage with followers on social media; connect with and share JHU community communications
  • Use AI to help with tasks such as content creation and audience targeting; but careful not to overuse AI and will always use it in a way that is ethical and responsible.
  • Write compellingly and accurately and show attention to detail.
  • Report on and monitor social media and website analytics and data, track user behavior to improve audience targeting (potentially employing AI or other new technologies).
  • Keep up with social media trends and think about how they could be included into our strategy.
  • Use the content verticals to improve our strategy and potentially help with their development
  • Develop and execute marketing and social media campaigns.
  • Lead and communicate with relevant stakeholders on marketing initiatives and timeline expectations, including informing stakeholders when projects at risk.


Website, email marketing, and publication support (30%)

  • R-RIGHTS newsletter production management, adhering to best practices and publication schedule.
  • Email marketing & list management.
  • Blog post coordination with authors, creation of post on R-RIGHTs website, blog post promotion.
  • Update JHU Department of Mental Health New Publication form on a monthly basis with new R-RIGHTS publications.
  • R-RIGHTS website updates & improvements.


Event, grant, and speaker support (30%)

  • Identify conferences and events that align with R-RIGHTS initiatives. Regularly share relevant conference information, deadlines, etc. with team to identify conferences to participate and share work.
  • Identify grants that align with Dr. McGee and R-RIGHTS research work. Keep Dr. McGee and relevant team members informed of deadlines, opportunities, etc.
  • Assist with event and speaker efforts such as media, publication, and podcast coordination, help foster community relationships via social media engagement, increasing R-RIGHTS visibility on campus, engagement with JHU SOE Communications Manager to ensure communications alignment.
  • Coordination with R-RIGHTS speakers to align on themes, messaging, marketing materials, event preparation and execution.
  • Support R-RIGHTS speakers and project manager with logistical coordination as needed.
  • Determine collateral needs for R-RIGHTS speaker event promotion and coordinate with relevant teams as needed to ensure delivery.
  • Regularly report on event engagement and associated trends, offering analysis and suggested for enhanced engagement.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in the social media, digital, and mobile device communications environment.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and tools.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years college coursework.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience or interest in social media and digital communication.
  • Ability to maintain social media pages, groups, and applications (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent work attitude and habits including reliability, flexibility, and the ability to think and work independently and as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and critically in problem-solving and project implementation.
  • Ability to craft and create visual abstracts of scientific papers for social media.

Classified Title: Communications Coordinator
Role/Level/Range: ATO 37.5/03/OE
Starting Salary Range: $18.20 - $33.90 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
