Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer (Additive Manufacturing Expert)

General Information:
Hitachi Energy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for its Technology Center group in Raleigh, NC location. This position is a mechanical engineer role in an R&D team that is serving global technology development of the distribution transformer business. Our business is power equipment manufacturing which involves various business processes from engineering to manufacturing. This position will be located in the office. Candidates will be required to travel up to 10% (globally) based on project needs.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Execution of Additive Manufacturing related R&D projects as agreed within the Distribution and Dry-Type Transformer business. Drive innovation in metal AM processes for transformer components, including design optimization, process parameters, and material development.
  • Develop and implement advanced manufacturing strategies to enhance product performance and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Conduct material characterization, data analysis, and validation of AM processes for transformer applications.
  • Works closely with metals manufacturing facilities to provide support on current and future research projects with special emphasis on material characterization, data collection, data analysis, technical report and presentation creation, 3D CAD modeling, 3D printing (prototyping
  • Improves the effectiveness of the methods of working with additive manufacturing industry partners by monitoring best practices related to manufacturing workforce development, and advanced manufacturing technology implementation.
  • Lead and execute R&D projects in distribution and dry-type transformer technology, with a focus on additive manufacturing applications.
  • Create and optimize 3D CAD models specifically designed for additive manufacturing (DfAM)

  • Identification, exploration, and implementation of technology/product development and growth strategies to enhance and secure global positioning. Participation and publications in renowned magazines and conferences such as IEEE and Cigre.
  • Set and maintain the standards of programmatic and technical requirements, specifications, and related technical documentation.
  • Support prototype builds and testing activities, analyzing results and recommending design modifications as necessary.

Your Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar with 5 years of related experience or a Master's degree with 3 years of related experience.
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in metal additive manufacturing with a demonstrated impact of increasing organizational awareness and implementation of sustainable practices.
  • Strong background in CAD/CAE software and design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)
  • Experience with powder metallurgy and metal AM material properties
  • Experience with metal AM technologies (DMLS, SLM, EBM)
  • Advanced understanding of additive processes and material science in additive manufacturing is required
  • Good command of oral and written English language skills
  • Ability to interact with the Distribution Transformer Global Product Group (GPG), management, developer engineers, and final users in a local Hitachi Energy organization and present technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Deep understanding of technical aspects in multiple disciplines or functional areas and ability to make deep-dive analyses on complex projects.
  • Lead complex projects/tasks using the Gate Model Project management method, suggest improvements/redefine the process, mentoring on using the Gate model.
  • Ability to lead risk assessments together with leading the mitigation actions on the global technology organizational level.
  • Accepts positive change and can communicate outcomes and benefits to others.
  • Experience with topology optimization and generative design.
  • Experience with thermal and fluid flow simulation.
