This is a part-time (20 hours/week) position which supports PI Dr. Kumi Smith in operationalizing her recently awarded NIH R34 to reduce healthcare barriers for people who use drugs in Minnesota. The project will work with community partners to develop a telehealth service at participating syringe exchange programs (SSPs). The goal is to increase uptake of key health services (addiction treatment, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases) in a highly marginalized population.

The ideal candidate has experience working in both academic and community settings, with an interest or strong curiosity about harm reduction and community engaged research. The position is 50% time, and the candidate can work remotely except for periodic in-person meetings with community partners including those living in greater Minnesota (Mankato, Duluth). The position has funding for 3 years.

Description of duties:

Study coordination (50%)

  • Work with PI to develop and implement comprehensive timelines, budgets, project plans, and to assign and monitor resources and workflow to meet grant deliverables
  • Work with study team to guide field activities across the four participating study sites (syringe service programs) in Metro and greater Minnesota
  • Work with study team to foster partnership with community partners (SSPs, SSP clients, other stakeholders) to support field activities including recruitment, intervention preparation, training, and data collection
  • Assist study team in preparation of study materials (e.g. surveys, recruitment posters) and study dissemination efforts (e.g. conference posters, scientific manuscripts, conference presentations)

Administrative (25%)

  • Oversee communications and interactions with UMN IRB, NIH, SPA, the SPH finance team, and grant sub-awardees
  • Summarize and identify action steps/to do items for each meeting along with necessary timelines
  • Maintain schedule of IRB and NIH timelines and maintain NIH or other reporting schedules

Financial & Regulatory (25%)

  • Effectively track and manage budget expenditures and any reporting requirements from NIH and SPA
  • Process invoices, purchase orders, and expenses in collaboration with SPH and finance teams.
  • Coordinate data usage and sharing agreements between UMN and external partners.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 4 years professional experience, or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including faculty, colleagues, community organizations, and funding agencies
  • Demonstrated experience with grants, technical writing and reviewing, budget development
  • Proficient with various technology applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, email, calendaring
  • Ability to manage work in an environment priorities and strategies can shift and evolve
  • Ability to host and lead virtual meetings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to work independently; high level of self-motivation
  • Excellent organizational skills, including time management and ability to manage multiple project deadlines
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and interest in working with groups of diverse backgrounds and lived experience
  • A willingness to learn and problem solve as part of a highly collaborative team
  • Experience with data management such as collection, entry, management or analysis of datasets. Proficiency in data management software including Excel is also a plus.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities such as those who use drugs, have experienced homelessness, or who are justice involved
  • Experience with human-subjects related research projects

Epidemiology and Community Health:

The Division of Epidemiology & Community Health focuses on disease and health in various populations. Our faculty and students examine the distribution, cause and prevention of diseases, and how human behavior affects overall health.

The division offers MPH, MS and PhD degrees, as well as dual and joint degrees.

The work of epidemiologists spreads across sectors and areas of study, so our division and faculty are often partnering with other research entities and community organizations on public health research and interventions. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $29.33 - $36.05 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
