Job Summary:

The Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Division of Endocrine Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) are collaborating on the recruitment of an exceptional endocrine fellowship trained otolaryngologist to join UW Health's Endocrine Surgery Program. The selected finalist would be at the forefront of efforts to provide innovative multidisciplinary patient centered care for patients with endocrine disease and will work collaboratively to enhance the surgical training of residents and fellows in both Otolaryngology and General Surgery. We are looking for candidates with a track record of clinical excellence and academic contributions as demonstrated through training, research, execution of scholarly activities, and/or practice experience.

The Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery consists of 27 primarily appointed faculty members and seven specialized clinical sections: Otology-Neurotology, Laryngology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Comprehensive Otolaryngology, Rhinology-Skull Base Surgery, Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery, and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Division physician faculty members provide full-range, state-of-the-art advanced care for adults and children in six local clinical practice sites in the Madison area and five regional practice sites across Wisconsin and Illinois. Education within the division includes a commitment to medical student education, an ACGME-accredited residency program of 20 residents, and fellowships in Head & Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery and Laryngology.

The Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery currently has 29 active extramural grants with a total budget of nearly $26 million, as well as collaborations with related programs across the University of Wisconsin campus, and through the Head & Neck Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) funding. These collaborations provide ample opportunities for investigators at the Assistant Professor rank to form critical mentoring relationships on their way towards independence.

The Division of Endocrine Surgery has 6 fellowship-trained faculty members that are providing nationally recognized multidisciplinary care to patients with endocrine surgical diseases. They are dedicated to training the next generation of endocrine surgeons and advancing the field of endocrine surgery through a diverse portfolio of research projects. Service and leadership are also paramount within the division. The Chair of the Division of Endocrine Surgery was recently named as President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.

Both divisions are fully committed to integrating this faculty recruit into their clinical, research and education programs.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 12th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The department provides a robust infrastructure of services including academic resources such as the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides clinical trial coordinator support for clinical trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post- award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.


Responsibilities:

Elective clinical practice will include endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid) as well as non-endocrine head and neck surgery. There will also be Otolaryngology call responsibility shared with Otolaryngology partners.

Research Responsibilities include an expectation to participate in, develop, and/or continue robust original and high-quality lines of research inquiry. Conduct research activities that may draw on numerous available collaborators.

Teaching Responsibilities will include teaching surgical trainee experience across four programs (Otolaryngology-HNS residency, General Surgery Residency, Endocrine Surgery Fellowship, and Head/Neck Fellowship). Endocrine surgery training is a critical educational component for each of these groups of trainees.

The chosen applicant will participate in administrative, and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members. The chosen applicant will teach medical students, residents, and fellows.

By the appointment start date, candidate's specialization must include eligibility or certification in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) or by the American Osteopathic Boards of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (AOBOOHNS). Candidates will also currently be participating in or have completed an American Head & Neck Society accredited fellowship with a primary focus in Endocrine Surgery by the appointment start date.

Additional Information:

The School of Medicine and Public Health is in the process of creating a Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (HNS). Currently, Otolaryngology-HNS is a division within the Department of Surgery. As a result, this position will transition to the Department of Otolaryngology-HNS with an anticipated effective date of July 1, 2025. Specific details regarding the change in department and operational area will be communicated with the finalist in advance. The duties, salary, and expectations of this role will not change as a result of this department change.
