About the Job

Working in the Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis section of The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, the Researcher 1 will report directly to the section leader Dr. Ningling Kang and perform daily research work under Dr. Kang's directions and guidance. Dr. Kang's research program is funded by an R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health to study bi-directional interactions between cancer cells and the microenvironment of the liver that control metastatic tumor cell growth in the liver. The Researcher 1 will perform mouse-based studies and cell-based in vitro experiments and be expected to obtain results and analyze the data for research articles and grant applications.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

Mouse Work - 45%

- Set up mouse breeding pairs, monitor female pregnancy and pup delivery, wean mouse pups, perform ear tagging and tail snipping of the mice. Perform DNA extraction and PCR protocols for genotyping.
- Perform implantation of tumor cells into mice by subcutaneous injection or portal vein injection.
- Harvest tumor biopsies from the mice and perform relevant analyses, such as immunofluorescence staining and microscopy, cell culture, Western blot analysis, and histology.

Cell Experiments - 45%

- Grow and maintain stable cell cultures as needed. Perform in vitro experiments to answer scientific questions, including relevant cell biological experiments and biochemical studies.
- Keep detailed records of all experiments and procedures in notebooks, databases, spreadsheets, and other applications.

General Laboratory Activities - 5%

- Autoclave waste material according to established procedures. Clean and maintain laboratory space and equipment to comply with all applicable safety regulations.

Literature Search - 5%

- Review literature as suggested by the principal investigator and select relevant facts, techniques, and procedures. Summarize the findings from the literature.

Pay and Benefits
