Nursing Externship Summer 2025 - Central Facilities

Job Overview:

The Student Nurse Externship Program offers nursing students the chance to gain hands-on experience in our various hospitals under the supervision of registered nurse (RN) preceptors. This position is for interest in RWJBH Central Facilities:

• RWJ University Hospital New Brunswick
• RWJ University Hospital Somerset
• RWJ University Hospital Rahway
• Children s Specialized Hospital New Brunswick
• Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

This nine-week program during the summer months is designed to bridge the gap between classroom education and real-world clinical practice, enhancing students' skills and confidence. During the program, externs work closely with RN preceptors to assess patient needs, plan and deliver interdisciplinary care, and perform basic clinical skills safely and competently. Preceptors, who are experienced RNs, provide 1:1 supervision, support, and feedback to externs throughout the program. Each extern will mirror a preceptor s schedule for the externship duration.

Scheduling Requirements:

• Mandatory two-week orientation (June 2nd 13^th)
• Externship schedules will vary based on preceptor matches and education days; may include weekends and holidays during the summer months
• Externship ends August 2^nd, 2025

Program Requirements:

In order to be considered for the Student Nurse Extern Program, the following criteria must be met:

• Students must be in good standing as indicated by their academic institution
• Students must have completed at least 2 clinical nursing courses prior to the program start date
• Students must readily accept responsibility for adhering to the orientation schedules and the subsequent work schedule as defined by the hospital
